DRUMMOND'S ONION/PRAIRIE ONION

--20 Plants/Bulbs--

THIS NORTH AMERICAN NATIVE ONION IS RARELY OFFERED FOR SALE

This listing is for 20 plants. Can be planted practically any time the ground can be worked.

Drummond's onion (Allium drummondii), also known as Wild garlic and Prairie onion, is a perennial plant native to North America. It has been utilized by Native American tribes ranging from the South Texas Plains, over to New Mexico and then into California.as a food source for thousands of years. They typically cooked the onions in an earth oven, which converted the starch into sugar, making them more digestible. Tribes of the Texas and New Mexico area used the onion as an addition to meat dishes, whereas some tribes in California often used it as a main dish. A nice, flowering species, the lovely white flowers come into bloom April through May coming in a variety of colors ranging from white to violet to pink.

USDA map shows the range of Drummond's Onion as being from Texas up into South Dakota and from New Mexico over into Arkansas but are also known to grow wild in other states not on this map.
These onions survive our long, hot Texas droughts when we sometimes go months with no rain and thrive in our coldest winters. Plants multiply by underground bulbs, topset bulbs and seed. Goes dormant during hot weather. The aboveground leaves will dry up and disappear but will quickly regrow when cooler weather arrives.

You will receive either the freshly dug entire plant (during the cool seasons) or the topset bulbs (when plants are dormant).

I sometimes use these onions' green leaves as chives. I sometimes sautee them and add to a bowl of chili or use the raw leaves as chives sprinkled on a baked potato.
If you would like to know more about Drummond's Onion, there is a lot of information available via a Google search. This plant has been featured in many wild edibles and other native plant books.
As with all wild plants, exercise caution and educate yourself on their chemical properties.
